He Said He’d Changed

You know what’s funny? Every guy who says, “I’m not like the others,” ends up being exactly like the others.

Cameron told me he quit drinking. He said his DUI last year was just a “bad night.” I believed him — because I always believe the “good version” of people I care about. He swore he was going to therapy, working on himself, blah blah blah.

Then one night, he showed up at my apartment half-drunk, angry because I didn’t answer my phone. He started yelling, throwing stuff. The cops came — again. It was like déjà vu. The next morning, he posted on Instagram some quote about “healing” and “forgiveness.” I almost laughed.

What they don’t tell you is, DUIs aren’t just about alcohol. They’re about denial. You can lose your license, your job, your family — and still tell yourself you’re fine.

Cameron, if you ever read this: you’re not a monster, but you’re not the victim either. You had every chance to do better. You just didn’t want to.

For anyone reading this — if someone shows you who they are after a DUI, believe them the first time.

Birdy.
